On Dec 9, CIHI released new data showing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health care system. Their analysis covered five topics, amongst them “Hospital services, including surgeries and intensive care units”.
Some of CIHI’s findings in this topic included:
- Between March 2020 and June 2021, hospitals admitted 11% fewer inpatients, compared with the pre-pandemic period.
- From March 2020 to June 2021, almost 560,000 fewer surgeries were performed due to cancellations and delays, compared with the pre-pandemic period (excluding Quebec).
- From March 2020 to June 2021, there was an average increase of about 3,000 additional inpatient admissions a month for respiratory conditions, compared with the pre-pandemic period.
