On December 01, 2021, the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario released their annual report for 2021. Within was a comprehensive review of the way outpatient surgeries are handled in Ontario. The findings included the following:
A 37%-57% increase in wait times for surgery
A glaring lack of equity in wait times across different provincial regions
Just over 1/3 of hospitals not meeting the 90% use target for operating rooms.
Siloes of information about surgical capacity between public hospitals, private hospitals, and independent health facilities have lead to significant unused operating room capacity.
